Elio Ōgast

Elio is a sibling to Norma, in development at Ōgast. Where Norma runs wide and even across twenty weights, Elio narrows its focus to eight — an axis built from two hand-drawn extremes, Hair and Ultra, with the six named stops between them genuinely interpolated rather than invented. Both masters are drawn in full; what's still catching up is the shared glyph set, since a variable font can only ship a character once its lightest and heaviest drawings agree closely enough to interpolate cleanly between them. A little over half the design is there already, and the rest is following weight by weight. Even mid-development, the two extremes already read as a distinct temperament — reserved and almost weightless at Hair, blunt and unwavering at Ultra — the same letterforms pulled toward opposite instincts. Its default words in the Type Tester borrow the language of wine and terroir, the same register Norma continues at greater length: Appellation, Cuvée, Héritage — words that, like the type itself, describe something inherited and still being shaped.
